My musical approach differs from that of many others, because in the depth of my hearing it refers to the color movement of sounds. I don't write melodies and paint them with whatsoever
appropriate colours (as it often happens with instrumentation). On the contrary, I try to write a moving timbre, which itself appears to be a melody. This refers to classical music's tradition of
‘New Music‘, as it was first developed by Stravinsky, Debussy and Schönberg, and was continued later on in the second half of the 20th century in the music of Boulez, Nono, Stockhausen – and
later also in the music of my composition teacher Wolfgang Rihm.
I haven't written much ‘New Music‘ myself. I'm too deeply rooted in Jazz and Pop. But ‘New Music‘ has left its mark on me. It is a different approach to sound and melody that resonates in every
musician who has dealt with this fascinating tradition.
